Make Salt Lake members, partners, and friends,

Many of you may already know that our current shop manager, Rio Sabella, will soon be leaving Make Salt Lake and moving away from Salt Lake City. As Rio prepares for this move the Make Salt Lake Board of Directors is immensely grateful for his work here. He has been a phenomenal asset to our community, providing a friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable face to the organization. He has spent the past years making many improvements to the shops and procedures, hiring a strong team, fostering a culture of passion and excellence, and helping to grow Make Salt Lake in many powerful and impactful ways. Aaron Wolcott and Jen Atwood will be taking on some additional responsibilities and helping to facilitate this transition.

In planning for Rio’s upcoming departure, the Board of Directors also set out to find someone with the right vision and experience to lead the organization through the next phase of our evolution. We are delighted to announce that we have found that leader. Michael Sanders will be serving in the role of Executive Director. Members can expect to begin seeing him around the space this week as he begins his work and training with Rio, Aaron, Jen, the Shop Champions, and the board.

Michael is a creative innovator with a passion for making things happen. He is best known locally as the co-founder of the Urban Flea Market and a high-profile LGBTQ activist who has served in leadership roles on many boards and committees. Over the past ten years, Michael has devoted considerable time and effort to fundraising and enhancing visibility for many vital community organizations and causes here in Utah. Among the experiences which he brings to Make Salt Lake: he has spent time fostering community collaborations, producing vibrant events, cultivating programming for the local creative community, and carries an impressive track record of success both as an entrepreneur and as a business manager.

Please join us in welcoming Michael in his new role as Executive Director. If you have questions or comments for the staff, the Executive Director, or the board as we chart our course for the next phase, please let us know via email at the addresses provided below. We remain committed to the same values and programs that have served the member community and the local UT creative and Tech communities, and look forward with excitement for that which is yet to come.

We hope that all who read this are having a safe and joyful season of gratitude,

Make Salt Lake Board of Directors
